Biography

Detra Shaw-Wilder is a shareholder at Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton and a practices in the Complex Litigation department. She concentrates her practice in business law and complex commercial litigation. Ms. Shaw-Wilder represents a diverse range of clients in matters brought in state and federal courts, including product liability, contract disputes, commercial foreclosures, commercial landlord-tenant litigation, employment law disputes, and construction litigation. Having been involved in significant litigation, she has a broad range of trial experience in commercial cases.She has won recognition from her peers, professional and business publications, and others. Florida Trend magazine has recognized her as an “Up and Comer” in the South Florida legal community; she was named one of the most influential business people under the age of 40 by Network Miami Magazine; and South Florida CEO magazine has recognized her as a “Next Generation” leader. She has earned Martindale-Hubbell’s highest rating (AV).

In addition to participating in several panel discussions hosted by organizations such as the Florida Association of Women Lawyers and the University of Miami Center for Ethics and Public Service, Ms. Shaw-Wilder has been invited to speak before members of the National Law Institute and the Florida Association of Women Lawyers.

She has made her career multifaceted by involving herself in minority-related and other activities in the South Florida community. She is a former vice president of the Wilkie D. Ferguson Bar Association (formerly the Black Lawyers Association), and an immediate past president of the Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association. She has served on the Dade County Bar Association Board of Directors, has co-Chaired the organization’s Banking and Business Litigation and Civil Litigation Committees, and has served as a Board member of the University of Miami Law Alumni Association. She is also active in her church and in promoting diversity and inclusion for law students attending local universities.

Ms. Shaw-Wilder earned her J.D. degree, cum laude, in 1994 from the University of Miami School of Law and became a member of the Inter-American Law Review and the International Moot Court Team Association. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida in 1990.
